The Baltic Association for Folklore and Esoteric Studies has opened BAFES-R-005, a historical and anthropological study of Vodou in the Baltic region.
The study asks whether Vodou/Vodun traditions can be documented as actual religious practice in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, how knowledge of these traditions circulated, and where the word “voodoo” appears chiefly in media, art or commercial esotericism.
Initial research has identified scholarly literature on Baltic folk magic and concrete archive leads in Estonia. This does not yet establish a historical relationship with Haitian Vodou. Researchers will distinguish primary evidence, later interpretations and unsupported claims.
The BAFES-R-005 project page lists its scope and research status. A full report will only be released following source verification and review.
